Real stories from Ernesto (Spain) and Hiromasa (Japan)

When it comes to learning English, confidence and consistency matter just as much as grammar and vocabulary. At Living Learning English, we’ve seen how long-term, one-to-one immersion courses give young learners the structure and support they need to truly thrive.

Ernesto: 14 Weeks of One-to-One Learning

Ernesto, a 16-year-old student from Spain, has completed four courses with us, totalling 14 weeks. Each time, he returned to the same teacher, Penny, at her home in rural Wales. That continuity made all the difference.

"We pick up where we left off, build towards long-term goals, and see real growth in confidence – with support from me, the family, and even the whole village!"— Penny, Teacher at Living Learning English

Because Penny knew Ernesto well, she could tailor each course to his needs.

"Writing wasn’t his favourite task, but over time, I could gently encourage him to face those challenges. The familiarity helped me set expectations from day one."

“There’s real confidence that comes from knowing the routine, being familiar with the family, the pets, and the surroundings – even knowing what’s down the lane at the local pub (just to say hello!). It makes learning natural, relaxed, and more effective.”

Hiromasa: Academic Support Alongside School Life

Hiromasa, a student from Japan, has been studying with Living Learning English since April 2022. He has now completed eight courses, totalling over 14 weeks of one-to-one tuition with the same teacher, Caroline.

Unlike Ernesto, Hiromasa’s courses run alongside his mainstream schooling in the UK. He stays with Caroline during school breaks and sometimes for extended periods during the academic year. This long-term relationship has provided him with consistent academic and emotional support while living and studying away from home.

"On his return this time, it was wonderful to see how his spoken English had progressed. He was confident speaking on the phone, following multi-person conversations with ease, and even spoke clearly – without mumbling. Each time he returns, we can see a real level of improvement."— Caroline, Teacher at Living Learning English

"Hiromasa said he would like help choosing his upcoming GCSE subjects and building his vocabulary for the next half term. It’s clear that he wants to continue with his English as a foreign language – and it’s a privilege to support him through each stage of his journey."

"The support from his teacher Caroline has been excellent – not only helping him improve his English, but also settle into school life and succeed academically."— Hiromasa’s family

Hiromasa’s progress has been praised by his family, tutor, and school. Over time, his communication skills have become more natural and fluent, and he has grown noticeably more confident – both in the classroom and in daily life.

Why Long-Term One-to-One Learning Works

Whether a student is preparing for school in the UK, looking to boost academic English, or simply trying to improve fluency and confidence, long-term learning provides a framework for real, sustained progress.

Here’s why it works:

  • No time lost adjusting: Students returning to the same teacher and home environment feel comfortable right away – so lessons can begin from where they left off.
  • Long-term goals, built step-by-step: The teacher knows the student’s progress and learning history. Courses build on what’s been achieved, rather than starting from scratch.
  • Deeper personalisation: Teachers know how to motivate each student and gently challenge them to grow.
  • Emotional security: Familiarity with the teacher, family, and setting builds trust and confidence.
  • Academic and cultural growth: Students like Hiromasa benefit not just from language support, but from mentoring that helps them succeed in UK school life.

A Proven Pathway to Success

Both Ernesto and Hiromasa show how valuable this kind of continuity can be. Ernesto’s English has improved dramatically, but so has his willingness to engage with tasks like writing. Hiromasa has not only grown academically but developed a level of independence and maturity that’s been praised by his school and family.

These students didn’t just attend English courses – they built relationships, grew in confidence, and developed the tools to succeed in English and beyond.

At Living Learning English, we believe in the power of personal connection and long-term support. For international students – especially younger learners – this continuity can make all the difference.
